The main square in Erfurt is the Dom Platz in front of the stunningly beautiful cathedral which is beautifully lit at night. The Dom Platz is also used for all kinds of festivals, concerts, markets and other events. Next to the Dom Platz is the Petersberg Citadel, recently renovated and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The views from the Citadel are stunning enough to climb the many steps up. The city has a wonderful vibe, especially in the evenings with nice weather when the many terraces are filled with visitors.

More about Erfurt
Erfurt is one of Germany’s best-preserved historic cities, known for its medieval charm, colourful architecture, and relaxed atmosphere. Located in the heart of the country, Erfurt has been an important trading and cultural centre for more than a thousand years. Walking through the old town feels like stepping into another era, with narrow cobbled streets, timber-framed houses, and church towers rising above the skyline.
The city became especially wealthy during the Middle Ages thanks to trade routes that passed through the region. Erfurt was once famous for the cultivation of woad, a plant used to create blue dye before synthetic colours existed. This trade brought prosperity to the city and helped shape many of the elegant buildings that still survive today. One of Erfurt’s most recognisable landmarks is the Krämerbrücke, a rare medieval bridge lined with houses and small shops that continues to be used by residents and visitors alike.
Erfurt also holds an important place in German cultural and religious history. The reformer Martin Luther studied at the University of Erfurt in the early 16th century before entering the monastery in the city. Churches, monasteries, and historic squares throughout Erfurt still reflect this deep historical connection and give the city a timeless atmosphere that feels both peaceful and inspiring.

Today, Erfurt blends its rich history with modern city life in a natural and welcoming way. Cafés and local markets fill the historic squares, while restored buildings and green spaces make the city feel vibrant without losing its authenticity. Unlike larger tourist destinations, Erfurt moves at a slower pace, allowing visitors to fully appreciate its architecture, history, and everyday life. This balance between medieval heritage and contemporary culture makes Erfurt a fascinating place to explore and photograph throughout every season.
